THE VITAMIN D STACK
Tool 1: 25-Hydroxyvitamin D Blood Test
Available through physician orders at routine physicals. In most states, also available through direct-to-consumer testing services without a physician visit (Everlywell, Let’sGetChecked, and similar). Costs approximately $20 to $40 dollars without insurance. The measurement is straightforward, and the result is actionable: below 30 ng/mL indicates supplementation is warranted; 30 to 40 ng/mL suggests modest supplementation; below 20 ng/mL indicates clinical deficiency that may warrant physician discussion.
Tool 2: Vitamin D3 with K2 Supplement
D3 (cholecalciferol) is the active form for raising serum 25-OH-D. K2 (MK-7 form) directs calcium into bone and away from arteries. Together they are the standard evidence-based supplementation approach for adults over 60. Dosing: 2,000 to 4,000 IU D3 with 100 to 200 mcg K2, taken with a fat-containing meal. Reassess blood levels after 3 months of consistent supplementation. Discuss with your physician if you take blood-thinning medications, as K2 can interact with warfarin.
Adults in climates north of approximately 40 degrees latitude (roughly the latitude of Denver, Philadelphia, or Madrid) receive essentially no UVB radiation from October through March. A UVB lamp provides the same vitamin D synthesis stimulus as outdoor sun exposure and is particularly valuable for people who cannot spend 15 to 30 minutes outdoors daily during winter. Medical-grade UVB lamps are available for home use. Standard seasonal affective disorder (SAD) lamps do not produce UVB and do not support vitamin D synthesis.
WEEK IN REVIEW
Sunday — Vitamin D as a hormone precursor affecting muscle, bone, immune, mood, and testosterone function. Deficiency in 40 to 70 percent of adults over 60. Target: 40 to 60 ng/mL. Introduced Standing Thoracic Side Bend with Lateral Reach and Dumbbell Lateral Raise.
Tuesday — Sun exposure protocol and its limitations in adults over 60. Three lateral chain stretches: Standing Side Bend (full chain), Side-Lying Hip and Lat Stretch, Standing IT Band Cross Stretch.
Thursday — Three shoulder abduction progressions: Cable Band Lateral Raise (constant tension), Dumbbell Lateral Raise with Pause (time under tension), Single-Arm Lateral Raise with Support (asymmetry correction). Vitamin D and type II muscle fiber function.
Today — The vitamin D toolkit: 25-OH-D blood test, D3/K2 supplement, UVB lamp for winter.
Vitamin D deficiency is silent, widespread, and correctable. The blood test costs less than a gym session. The supplement costs less than a meal out per month. The consequences of long-term deficiency for muscle, bone, and mood are not silent at all.
